At the suggestion of President James Monroe,
both Houses of Congress unanimously passed a resolution in January
1824 in which they invited the Marquis de LaFayette to visit the
United States as the guest of the nation. During the year or so that
he spent in the United States his tour included the Atlantic seaboard,
Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana; then up the Mississippi River
to St. Louis, back to Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh,
and to New York State once more by way of Niagra Falls. His visit
was a triumphant success. He was feted everywhere and the object
of the most enthusiastic acclaim. Songs, marches, and special dance
music were composed and performed in his honor, and the titles of
some of this music indicate the popular devotion he aroused: "Welcome
the Nation's Guest", "The Chivalrous Knight of France", "Come
Honor the Brave ", and "Washington's Favorite, the Brave
LaFayette". Some of the pieces in this section were written
as eulogies after LaFayette's death.
