Tips on Browsing the Database

Please read through carefully if you are unfamiliar with our database. The sections are:

Getting Started

  • From the Home Page, click on Browse the Collection.
  • Lester Levy arranged his music into 38 topical categories, with each category further divided into a number of boxes. Browsing enables you to search the contents of each of these boxes, either in their totality (i.e., the cover and music of each item) or by the covers alone.

Browsing Both Covers and Music of a Category

  • To view all of the covers and music contained in the category "Transportation," click on the button "Retrieve All."
  • Scroll down the list of box contents to the boxes containing music about Transportation (Boxes 57-58). Highlight the box you wish to view first.
  • Click on "Search" at the bottom of the screen.
  • You will now have access to each item contained in Box 57, both covers and music.

Browsing the Covers Only

  • To scan only the covers for items in the category "Sports," click the button "Covers Only."
  • Scroll down the list of box contents to the "Sports," and highlight one box.
  • Click on "Search" at the bottom of the screen.
  • You will now have access to thumbnail images of all of the covers contained in one box.
  • To view a full-size image of a cover, click on the thumbnail image.

Viewing the Images

  • To view a larger image of the cover or music to an item, click on the small image. If you wish to view the first page of music, scroll down to the bottom of the full-size cover page and click on "Page 1." Or, return to the search results and click on the thumbnail prints of the music.
  • REMINDER: If the music was published after 1923, it is not in the public domain, and therefore there will be no images.
